My Heroes
Chris with his long unruly locks
Now newly cut,
Waits for me early in the wee hours of
The morning to swim.
Even before the sun rises
I have a guardian who cares.
Weekly I patronize the library
Two blocks from my home.
Oh, those librarians know me
Ready with smiles and books to share.
At the Safeway, one checker, who
Despite being in her seventies
Comments on each new vegetable I provide.
The mysterious rutabaga, parsnip, or turnip.
There are three Mary’s that live on 46th street,
Neighbors for over thirty-five years.
Each greets me with big smiles,
Talks for a while.
No need for glory,
These are my heroes.
