De-collecting
Dust will always collect
Along the shelves of books
Histories of characters
Animals, travels, and biographies.
Read long ago, you’re sure
You’ll revisit them.
References of times past.
When I downsized, I let them go.
I often sift through bookshelves in my mind
Knowing exactly the title, the bent page,
Where my marked thoughts exist.
Paintings fill my walls.
Ones I couldn’t part with.
Vibrant colors, exotic figures,
Cultures once visited.
A rich life
Worthy of remembering.
Who knows if my grandkids
Will value these
Trinkets, the paintings, the remaining books?
They give me comfort.
I never mourn what isn’t there.
For I collect memories
And when they go,
So, will I.
